Today is a big day for Seo Árainn Mhór - the community app for Árainn Mhór is getting its own AI assistant, and for the first time, people can interact with it live.

This is a beta launch. We're putting it out into the world to learn how people use it, what questions they ask, and where it needs to improve. The AI can help with discovering what's happening on the island, finding local businesses and services, checking events, and getting general information about Árainn Mhór. It pulls from the same data that powers the Seo Árainn Mhór app, so everything it shares is real and up to date.

Getting Ready for Summer

We've got some exciting updates planned for the Seo Árainn Mhór app ahead of the summer season, and the AI assistant is a key part of that. This beta gives us the chance to gather real feedback from the community and visitors before those updates land. It's early days - things might not be perfect, and that's exactly the point. We want to learn, iterate, and make sure the experience is right before it becomes a core part of the app.

If you try it out and something doesn't work as expected, that's valuable feedback. This is very much a beta test and we're all ears.

Under the Hood

On the technical side, the assistant is built with Mastra, the open-source TypeScript framework for building AI agents. The server runs a dedicated community agent that connects directly to the Seo Árainn Mhór API - it can browse categories, find pages and businesses, and search events by date. The chat interface is a Next.js app with real-time streaming, so responses come through as the AI thinks rather than all at once.

We're using Google's Gemini Flash model for fast, responsive answers, and PostHog for analytics so we can understand how the assistant is being used and where it can be improved. Everything is self-hosted, giving us full control over the experience and the data.

The Next Chapter

I'm really excited about what this means for the community app. Seo Árainn Mhór has always been about connecting people with Árainn Mhór - whether you're a resident, a regular visitor, or discovering the island for the first time. Adding an AI layer on top of that opens up a whole new way to explore what the island has to offer.

This is just the beginning. We'll be watching closely, listening to feedback, and building towards something special for the summer and beyond.
